The Cornelius Chronicle
February 26, 2016

Anita Archer Gems
I love all of the opportunities to respond that I’m hearing in your classrooms.

Check out her website for all sorts of tips and videos about explicit instruction!

When students are working in partners, at table groups, or independently, this is what Anita says teachers should to do:

  • Monitor
    • Walk around
    • Look around
    • Talk around
    • Feedback

  • PEC, PEC, PEC (private and quiet)
    • Praise (4 positives to every 1 negative)
    • Encourage
    • Correct

Gomez and Gomez Walk-throughs
On April 28th, we will be doing G & G walk throughs with Dr. Gomez and Dr. Izquierdo.  They will be giving us feedback and further training on improvement on our next PD day which is April 29th.  This is what I see that we need to improve before our next walk through, as a building:
    • Word walls are robust with high frequency & student-generated words (60-90 words each)
    • Bilingual pairs posted are color-coded
    • Pocket chart or other system used to change bilingual pairs based on subject

Report Card Revision Committee
2-3 teachers per grade level across the district will be meeting on Tuesday, March 8 from 12-4 pm to review and revise our K-4 report card for next year, focusing on math, but also looking at other areas if time allows.  We are only making minor tweaks, not revamping the report card.  If you have any minor tweaks to make, please advise the reps from our building by Tuesday morning, so that they can bring your info to the meeting on Tuesday afternoon.  The reps from Cornelius are: Daisy, Rosa, Leah, Chelsea and Diego.  I will be leading the work.

Make PE/Music a Priority for your Students
It’s very easy to make PE & music a “reward” for good behavior, as students enjoy attending PE & music, but we need to make sure that all students attend PE & music on time for every session.  Also, during state testing, we need to make sure that students are not pulled from PE or music for testing.  Our students have very limited time for PE & music each week and our teachers want to make sure that every precious minute is used productively.  Please support our music and PE program by making it a priority in your students’ schedule.

Upcoming CIT Dates
March 9 - MOU Grade-level team collaboration time!
March 16 - Data Teams Collaboration

Myon & ST Math Rewards

Teachers - It's time to pull a myON report and see who won a pizza certificate in your classroom!  See directions in the email from Cheryl Plews.

Spring Break Competitions!

John O'Neill is providing a MyOn Pizza Party Contest for the classroom in our district with the most minutes read over Spring Break - one winner from a K-4 classroom.  These prizes will include pepperoni pizza and soft drinks for the entire class upon their return from break.  Cheryl Plews will calculate the time read and report out to all principals the winning classroom when students return from Spring Break.

For all K-4 schools, we will also have an ST Math Pizza Party Contest for the largest increase in syllabus progress over the break!
