Scholastic Book Fair - Nov 30 - Dec 4
We haven’t had a Scholastic Book Fair at Cornelius since 2010, so it’s time to have one! Giving our students access to books at very good prices (in both English & Spanish) is essential! Our school also earns 40% of the profits of the book fair, which we'll put back into the library! I chose this week to host it because I thought it would be perfect timing for holiday gifts! I personally love buying all of the children in my family books for Christmas! I’m going to be asking the Parent Club parents and others to be volunteers to help with the book fair! Please let me know if you have any particular parents or your own family members who would be good volunteers! It takes a village to put on a book fair! I need help setting up and tearing down the book fair, as well as holding it open all day on Tuesday for the student preview and before school/after school/lunch Tuesday, Wednesday, & Thursday.
Schedule for Book Fair:
Monday 11/30 - set up book fair; teacher preview
Tuesday 12/1 - student preview during regular library time (students can make a “wish list” to take home with them
Tuesday/Wednesday/Thursday - the book fair will be open before school, at lunch, and after school for purchases
Thursday 12/3 - book fair will be open from 3:15 pm - 6:00 pm for parents to purchase books before the Cornelius Sing-along at 6:30 pm
Friday 12/4 - book fair open for a couple of hours in the morning - then tear down
Community Sing-along and Meet Santa
The City of Cornelius is hosting a community Sing-along and Tree Lighting on Dec. 3rd at 6:30 pm. It will start at the Veteran’s Memorial Park (which is just a couple of blocks away on the main drag). Then we will walk parade-style to the City Hall where there will be an opportunity to meet Santa and eat cookies! Please promote this in your classrooms and encourage your students to attend! Bring your own families, if you wish! I will be bringing Gloria, for sure!
School-wide Holiday Art
Speaking of holidays, we will be hosting a Holiday Art Project time here on the last day before winter break, December 18 from 2-3 pm. We will play holiday music over the intercom. Each classroom can do whatever art project they would like to do! It doesn’t even have to be tied to CCSS! :) Make holiday cards or holiday gifts or just decorate paper! Up to you!
Catalog Sales
Thank you for promoting and perhaps purchasing from our catalog sale! We made $2300 in profit from the $5700 total sales! Yay! That will go into our ASB account that we can use to pay for field trips and other miscellaneous items that we need and don’t have the funds for--hopefully that isn’t copy paper in the spring!
Copy Paper
Speaking of copy paper - we have already gone through our fall order of copy paper. We are going to order more, but if teachers have extra copy paper - it seemed like reams and reams of it came in with school supplies, please bring some down to the staff workroom to share with all. That will save us some money now and we won't run out and have to hoard paper in the spring!

After School Program to Begin...Nov. 2nd
Thank you to the following staff who will be serving in our After School Reading and Math Club: Manuel Ramos & Merry Hansen in 2nd grade; Kathy Murillo & Daisy Heredia in 3rd grade; Jacob Bustamante & Chelsea Aillon in 4th grade, Cesar Loeza in Imagine Learning & ST Math; and supporting teachers: Elizabeth Aguilar, Sue Jansen, & Ana Hudson. We are inviting 70 2nd, 3rd, & 4th graders to participate in our after school program, who are all at risk in reading. Students will receive two days of reading instruction and two days of math instruction. Snacks and transportation will be provided! The program runs M-Th from 3:30 - 4:30 pm from Nov. 2 - Mar. 31.
2nd, 3rd, & 4th grade classroom teachers - please remind the invited students in your class that they are attending the After School Program starting on Monday! I will share with you the list electronically again; it is sorted by homeroom teacher.
Have your students who are participating meet in the cafeteria right after school and sit down at a table - then they will be given snacks by Manuel and Elizabeth and picked up by their after school teacher by 3:30 pm. A bus will take them home at 4:30 pm.
Math Adoption Committee
We will be starting a math adoption process for new math curriculum very soon! Thanks to Daisy Heredia and Jacob Bustamante for serving as reps from Cornelius. There are 22 teachers on the committee from across the district, representing all grade levels K-12. The Math Adoption Steering Committee (of which I am a member) will be attending the Math Caravan on Monday to preview the state-approved materials. We hope to have approval from the school board to purchase a new math adoption by spring break. We will update you when we have more information!

We will be having a “Souper Potluck” on “Terrific Tuesday” this week at lunch time - please sign up in the staff room! See the Sunshine Newsletter for more details! Don’t forget to submit your Sunshine dues - today is Pay Day!

Please remind your students to write their first & last names on their tickets, if possible. We have a lot of same names at our school!
