The Cornelius Chronicle
October 2, 2015

Monday - Wear your uniform!

Start Date for Important Event
Oct. 12th - Intervention groups / push-in support for literacy - starting a week later due trying to figure out the intervention groups.

G & G Feedback
Start with the environment--Below see the checklist of what we need to have in each classroom ASAP!  Definitely before G &G come back in April.  Let me know if you need any support in developing your environment.

DL Classroom Environment - all classrooms - no matter the language of instruction:
  • Items in classroom labeled in both languages - PK-5
    • Plenty of items clearly labeled in both languages - large print & color coded
    • Plenty of items labeled at or above grade level
    • Some items labeled at student eye level
  • Word walls posted in both languages
    • Word walls are color-coded & clearly posted (large print)
    • Word walls are robust with high frequency & student-generated words (60-90 words each)
    • Word walls are accessible to students & interactive
  • Student-generated alphabets posted in both languages (PK-5)
    • SG alphabets equally posted in both languages
    • SG alphabets are clearly posted (large print) or at student eye level
    • SG alphabets’ vocabulary at or above grade level

Math Feedback
Below you will see a whole school snapshot of what I saw during my math walkthroughs this week.  I loved seeing objectives and vocabulary that matched instruction posted & reviewed in almost every classroom.  I would love to see a math focus wall in each classroom by the next time I do math walkthroughs in a couple of weeks.  Just like G & G suggests, we need to work on environment first!  We want resources posted for students to use during math to access information.  Student-generated resources are the best because students pay more attention to what they created!  Save your money - don’t shop at Learning Palace--put your students to work, especially at the upper grades!

We do:
Students get to practice chorally responding to problem solving and try the problem on their own.  Student game: around the world with weight vocab flashcards.

Students get to practice matching animals that look similar (Engage NY lesson)
Students get to practice making number bonds on their EngageNY worksheet.
Students get to practice making pairs to add up to ten.  Students chorally chant the pairs:  “0 y 10 hacen 10.” “1 y 9 hacen 10.”

Turn and tell your partner ….
Teacher assigned math partners and they work on the problems together - they are trying to find a mistake in a problem.

Teacher demonstrates Use of Public Records
Public records provide students with valuable resources as they are developing new skills, vocabulary, and processes.  In addition, they provide access for struggling learners.

K Narrative:
Tell a story about something fun that you have done with your family.
1st Narrative:
Tell a story about something fun that you have done with a friend.

Tell a story about something fun that you did during the summer.
3rd Narrative:
Tell a story about a time that you felt proud about something that you did.
4th  Persuasive Writing Work Sample
In some countries, students are responsible for basic cleaning of their school buildings.  Fifteen minutes is set aside each day for all students to sweep, dust, and clean classrooms.  Do you believe your school should make students responsible for daily cleaning?  Why or why not?  Support your position with reasons and examples.
Classroom teachers will give this writing task and score it by the end of October.  Prompts are suggestions.  Your grade level team must agree on the prompt that you give...stick with the assigned mode--K-3 is Narrative and 4th grade is persuasive.
